Do something nice
for your favorite Progressive!
Dec 4
It’s that time of year again. Give the gift of your favorite site to a friend, family member, progressive or socialist by adding “/gift” to the end of any Substack URL with paid subscriptions (e.g., https://emilyoster.substack.com/gift).
By popular request, we’ve now made it possible to schedule your gift delivery for a future date, so you can get all your holiday shopping done today.
If you’re looking for a gift to give, here are a few suggestions for the holiday season. As a bonus, we’re featuring Substack writers who are also published authors, so you can buy your loved ones a book with a paid subscription to match. Check out If the Dead had Email, Gentrifying Paradise, The Dinner Party Before the Revolution. Ask your favorite bookstore to order one or more of the books.
Did you give a gift subscription this year? Share your recommendations with us in the comments!
Have a Happy Holiday Season, and don’t forget the Class Struggle!

BETTER DAYS – AND MORE STRUGGLE – ARE COMING!
The New Year
Did something just happen?
I felt a flux, a shift in space-time.
A far off tinkle of bells
or gears grinding or
the core of the earth vibrating.
It seemed to me that things
hit bottom and now they're rising.
What things?
Well everything.
Our future, etc.
Was it something the Aliens did?
Or was it the rumble of the coming
of the Singularity?
Perhaps The Age of Aquarius
has finally arrived, with a thud.
Maybe it was just me
working through some psych thing.
But it seemed like it was "out there"
something turning, turning as the bottom
of the year passed
and the days - and our chances -
grow longer.
In a few years someone will remark:
Don't you think everyone is nicer lately?
You don't hear that doomsday talk
and you don't hear those homeless haters.
We are more considerate of each other
and the Earth.
Don't you think?
And in a hundred years
they'll say, how strange people used to be.
Must have been all that stress.
